That is a myth. Do some more research. People have been bitten and they don’t die.

Comment on The largest and heaviest birds – Top 10 by Zaafar https://dinoanimals.com/animals/largest-and-heaviest-birds-top-10/#comment-1134 Mon, 17 Feb 2025 08:45:18 +0000 http://dinoanimals.com/?p=554#comment-1134 Great blog! It’s fascinating to learn about the largest and heaviest birds. I was particularly amazed by the sheer size of the ostrich and how it can run so fast despite its weight. The fact that the wandering albatross has the largest wingspan in the animal kingdom is mind-blowing too. It’s always intriguing to discover how these animals have adapted to their environments in such unique ways. Thanks for sharing this info, it was both educational and fun to read!

As an Indian, we are the only country with both lions and tigers in the wild. Tigers tend to be larger and more muscular than lions. Unlike lions, who often rely on their pride for hunting, tigers hunt solo, making them more skilled as hunters. Tigers are also better at fighting on their hind legs using both front paws, whereas lions typically use one paw while standing on three legs. Tigers are considered faster too. Historically, accounts from ancient Rome and Asia often favoured the tiger in encounters. Anil Dahar

I’d also add following the Beatty entry, a simple fact of wild Tigers vs wild Lions. Tigers get very domesticated. The Roman records show quite clearly the Tigers and Lions were largely freshly captured and wild, and the outcome of such encounters in favour of Tigers mostly. We only have to look at the last Tiger vs Lion encounter in 2011, Turkey, where the Tiger entered the Lions cage and killed the Lion in seconds, severing it’s jugular. Then there’s the one eyed Tiger who ended in Bromwich England killing over 30 lions. The last lion kill was made by the tiger having only one eye, its trainer had blinded it. There are many more accounts.Yes there are many accounts of lions killing Tigers, but it remains a wild Tiger will kill a Lion 7 times out of 10.

I’ll just take one skewed ”evidence” from that mass of skewed info. Interesting you list lion S killing one Tiger. This is the take of Clyde Beatty 1957. These following quotes are from Beatty’s books, that according to Beatty ( non scientist entertainer) demonstrate the Lion supreme over the Tiger. All Beatty’s evidence shows is his bias to the cheaper, and crowd attracting Lion he had to big up; info follows
In 1934, “Pasha”, a female tiger, attacked Clyde Beatty, only to have “Nero” the male lion attack the tigress and save Beatty’s life in an ensuing 25-minute fight

Female. 1 dead. Total 1 death

-In 1933, Beatty said that 16 tigers were killed because lions fight in gangs and tigers fight alone

Gang fight. 16 dead. Total 17 death(s)

– He continued further, mentioning a tigress named “Nellie” who was killed in a fight involving her and another tiger against eight lions, and another fight between 17 lions and 12 tigers, in which three tigers were killed.

Gang fight. 3 dead. Total 20 death(s)

-Beatty starred in the 1933 film The Big Cage in which fights between his lions and tigers were both done. The first fight was between Sultan the lion and Tommy the tiger, in which the lion killed the tiger

From footage it was clear that Tommy was smaller. Total 21 death(s)

-On page 33, Beatty states that he threw ammonia into Bobby’s face, because they wanted to stir the fight up, stating that it was an old animal trainer trick “seldom [used] because of the obvious discomfort it causes the animals”, at the end of the page saying that “Bobby, [was] pawing at his nose as though trying to get the fumes out of it”, showing that it interfered with the fight, but later on, Beatty states that Bobby continued fighting, lunging at Caesar four more times, though after Caesar made a maneuver to avoid Bobby’s fourth strike, Caesar managed to seize Bobby by the neck and kill it.

Manipulated fight. Total 22 death(s)

-In 1937, the Chicago Tribune reporter asked Beatty about one-on-one fights; he then stated he did not stage many of those as it was too expensive…but then says he had had plenty of such fights happen accidentally, and usually before he could stop it, one of the cats was dead. He went on to say that since 1927, 25 tigers were killed by lions, and no lions were killed by tigers.

Possibly referring to early fights, if that is the case, 3 unspecified individuals died. Total 25 Death(s)

-Sehka, a three-year-old Bengal tigress in Beatty’s circus “died of wounds suffered when she was attacked by Memphis, a lion in the act

Female. Total 26 Death(s)

-In 1940, Beatty talked about a case saying that while a tiger was performing, Nero the lion jumped from his pedestal, hit the tiger with a crash, stunning the big cat and sunk his teeth into the tiger’s back.[125] Evidently the fight was unfair, as it was an ambush.

Ambush, Total 27 Death(s)

-As Beatty stated in his book, Princess the tigress was dying in a “brief encounter with the maned enemy [male lion]

Female 28 Death(s)

-Beatty mentioned a case where Empress the tigress was killed by Detroit the lion.

Female 29 Deaths

-In Beatty’s book, he talked about a case where “Sleika”, a female tiger, was severely injured in a fight with Detroit the lion, had a broken back and died two days later.[

Female 30 Deaths

-Beatty stated that Puna, a male tiger who was known for being very friendly and even going up to his “natural enemies” [male lions] and be affectionate towards them, who was then killed in one of his “good will” moments by a lion

Ambush 31 Deaths

-A tiger by the name of “Poona” was killed by two lions in a “two-against-one battle

2v1 32 Deaths

-n 1951, Prince the lion killed two tigresses, Sheba and Rosie

Female(s) 34 Deaths

-In 1952, Juno the male lion reportedly killed 13 tigers and five lions.[133][134] It is unclear if Juno killed these animals directly or if he was simply part of the killing (such as several lions killing a tiger)

Unspecified. 47 Deaths

-In 1954, a tiger was killed in a melee while Beatty was trying to separate “two ferocious fellows”.[139] It is unclear if the tiger was killed fighting a male lion or not, as it does not clarify the animals that were in the fight.

Unspecified. 48 Deaths.

-In 1955, France the lion reportedly killed two tigers in Beatty’s circus.[140] There is no information given about the fights or on the tigers.

Unspecified 50 Deaths.

All of them were mentioned and all of them were unfair fights favouring Lions or unspecified.

The video evidence you cite is old, as nothing so barbaric would be allowed today. So what are the details of these old video’s. There are many the British did for propaganda purposes. Remember 3 lions are on British regalia. Many of the ”Tigers” used were small or females, and on occasion still won. Be wary of using ”videos” as scientific evidence. It’s not. Footage is not objective with motives and manipulation hidden, but in use.

Why would a jaguar hunt such a large snake and risk it? Hunting smaller prey carries less risk of injury or wounds and you get eaten practically the same. Would you, being a predator, take unnecessary risks?

I have not come across any reports or evidence of jaguars hunting such large snakes.
